THE TOEFL WRITING SECTION

We'll start with the Writing Section because it's traditionally been the part where people have the most problems, simply because most people don't write "Standard Academic English" very often.

By the way, please remember that you'll be using an American (qwerty) keyboard for the TOEFL. There are some important differences compared with the German keyboard (qwertz), especially in regard to some symbols -> " , ' etc.

In the revised Bulletin for 2001 - 2002, ETS listed 183 Writing Topics (click on the link to see the whole list). These are the types of topics that appear in the Independent Writing task.

While doing the practice writing assignments in our course you will:

  • practice grammar in context
  • actively practice your vocabulary
  • focus on English paragraph and sentence structure
  • focus on punctuation
  • practice your typing
(I'm sorry, but I can only correct essays sent to me via email. Please send them as regular emails, NOT as MS Word .doc or .rtf attachments and not as Latex files!!!)

Here's how we'll do the independent task part of the Writing Section

Now, let's take a look at what the "TOEFL Tips" document says about the Writing Section:
