2. Objectives

The goal of the class is to help you improve your score on the TOEFL Exam. Given the fact that the exam has been completely revised and is administered on a computer, there are some issues regarding "test taking" that have to be addressed.

Specifically, by the end of this course you should be:

  • completely familiar with all aspects of the form and general content the computerized TOEFL comprises

  • able to answer questions on all four parts of the TOEFL test with a clear understanding of the question types and how your answers will be scored

  • used to sitting in front of a computer screen for a couple of hours in a row, during which you're working on online English exercises. This is a VERY important skill for the TOEFL iBT, which is four hours long!

3. Prerequisites

  • upper- intermediate level proficiency in both spoken and written English (Abiturenglisch)

  • email access

  • recommended: basic knowledge of the Internet

4. The course structure involves

  • an introduction to the ETS TOEFL  iBT materials

  • introduction to and practice of a wide variety of TOEFL-level vocabulary

  • starting the second week, writing one practice essay per week. This assignment will be submitted to the instructor via email. It will be graded and returned via the same medium.

In addition to web pages of a more general nature, this site also contains a page for each class, which are linked to a calendar. These contain the topics for each day, as well as provide links that are relevant to the day's topics.

5. Class topics will include, but not be limited to:

  • A thorough introduction to the TOEFL iBT

  • Vocabulary practice

  • Listening practice

  • Speaking practice

  • A review of selected points of English grammar

  • A review of the elements of English writing (paragraphs, punctuation, etc.)

Last but not least: SUGGESTIONS FROM PARTICIPANTS REGARDING CLASS ACTIVITIES AND TOPICS ARE VERY WELCOME!
